We are finally back at the water! 🎣 This time we’re fishing a private dam in Ermelo, South Africa, together with Phoenix and my father-in-law. The plan for the day was simple — get the catfish rod out, target some barbel and see what carp this little dam could produce. It didn’t take long before the rods started going! 🎣 First fish: 3.5 kg 🐟 Phoenix gets in on the action 🔥 A solid 3.8 kg catfish joins the session 😂 And once again, the woman starts kicking the men’s asses! We went back to Bass Bay in Pretoria for a winter bank angling session, thinking it would be a quiet day… but the carp had other plans! Today we test the SAWA 12ft 3-piece rod that will be part of our 1000 subscriber giveaway. This is not a paid hype review — we did take the rod out, put it together, check the basic specs, and did a few real casts to see what distance we can actually get from it. The rod is rated 30–120g casting weight with a 3.5lb test curve, and we managed to get it into the 100m–117m range during testing. It’s not a super high-end rod, but for the everyday bank angler it looks like a decent rod to get started with or add to the setup. One small downside we noticed is that there are no clear alignment marks on the rod sections, so you need to line it up by eye. We spent the weekend fishing at Bronkhorstspruit Dam (BajaDam Resort) and it was a proper mission—bad weather and hyacinths made it tough, but we still managed to land a few fish and had an awesome time. Fishing a private dam in Ermelo turned into a proper test. Carp were extremely finicky, bass were on the bite, and catfish were clearly moving but staying just out of reach. We had to adjust tactics, change approaches, and stay patient to make the most of the session.
