Privacy Policy

Last updated: 23 June 2026

1. Introduction

DaarByt respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have. We operate a marketplace for fishing locations across South Africa.

2. Who we are

DaarByt is operating as a Sole Proprietor of the DaarByt platform (daarbyt.com). For privacy questions, contact us at support@daarbyt.co.za.

3. Information we collect

We collect only what we need to run the service.

Stored on our servers

  • Account details: name and email address, stored so you can sign in and we can contact you about bookings. Your password is hashed. We do not store it in plain text. You may optionally add a date of birth in your account settings.
  • Session and security data: session tokens, IP address, and browser type when you sign in.
  • Bookings: location, dates, stay type (day or night), pricing line items, status, total price, and payment reference.
  • Favourites: location IDs you save when signed in.
  • In-app notifications: messages about your bookings, including title, body, and whether you have read them.
  • Location listings (if you list a location): location name, descriptions, contact phone, address, coordinates, opening hours, photos, and rules you submit. You may also add an optional public contact email.
  • Payout setup (if you receive payouts): business name, bank account details, account holder name, and either a South African ID number or business registration number for the account owner. These are sent to PayStack to verify the bank account. We store only a PayStack subaccount reference, not your bank details or identity documents on the payout record. We pass your account email to PayStack as the payout contact. We do not collect it again for this purpose.

On your device or with third parties at checkout

  • Payments: when you pay, we pass your account email from your profile and the amount to PayStack. You enter card details on PayStack's checkout only. We do not store card numbers.
  • Near Me search: with your permission, coordinates are stored in your browser and may be sent to OpenStreetMap Nominatim for a place name. DaarByt does not store your GPS location on our servers.
  • Browser storage: a login hint, favourites cache, Near Me coordinates, and a temporary checkout marker in local or session storage.

4. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account, including email verification and password reset
  • Process bookings and payments
  • Verify payout bank account ownership before enabling owner payouts
  • Send transactional emails about your bookings (requests, approvals, confirmations)
  • Show location owners your name on booking requests, but not your email
  • Operate, secure, and improve the platform
  • Respond to support requests

We do not use your data for advertising or sell it to third parties.

5. Legal basis

Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), we process your information based on:

  • Contract: to provide the service you signed up for, including processing bookings and payments.
  • Consent: for optional profile fields, browser location access, and any communication where we ask for your permission
  • Legitimate interest: to keep the platform secure, prevent fraud, and maintain our systems

6. Sharing and third-party services

We share information only as needed to run the service, with these processors:

  • PayStack: card payments, owner payout account setup, and bank account verification (bank details, account holder name, and identity or registration number)
  • Resend: transactional emails for verification, password reset, and booking updates
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): hosting, database, and file storage
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim: reverse geocoding when you use location-based search
  • Google Fonts: icon fonts loaded from their CDN. Standard web request data such as IP address may be logged by Google.

Location owners receive your name on booking requests so they can manage bookings. Listing pages may show contact details the owner has chosen to publish publicly.

Payment provider PayStack receives your email and name for checkout and payouts. For payout setup, PayStack also receives bank verification details for the account owner.

7. Cookies and browser storage

We use session cookies to keep you signed in. These are essential for the service to work.

We also store small amounts of data in your browser: a login hint, a cache of your saved favourites, coordinates from "Near Me" search, and a temporary checkout marker. When you are signed in, favourites are also stored on our servers. We do not use marketing cookies or third-party analytics trackers.

8. How long we keep your data

We keep your account information while your account is active. Booking records are retained as needed to fulfil bookings, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Email verification and password-reset links expire after 24 hours. You can request deletion of your account by contacting us.

9. Security

Passwords are stored in hashed form. Payments are processed through PayStack hosted checkout. We never see or store any card details. We use industry-standard practices to protect data in transit and at rest.

10. Your rights

Under POPIA, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your data, subject to legal retention requirements
  • Object to certain processing or withdraw consent where it applies
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa

To exercise any of these rights, email support@daarbyt.co.za with your request. We will respond within a reasonable time.

11. Children

DaarByt is not directed at children under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information without parental consent, please contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of DaarByt after changes means you accept the updated policy.
