Gauteng, Kempton Park, Blaauwpan Dam
Blaauwpan Dam is a round municipal lake in Bonaero Park near Kempton Park on the East Rand. The City of Ekurhuleni runs it as a controlled-access park. Carp, barbel, bass, and kurper are common catches from the open bank.
Blaauwpan is one of the best-known carp waters in Gauteng. The basin is fairly uniform with reed beds on parts of the shore. Fish often follow the wind, so many anglers fish with the wind in their face. Typical cast distances are 60 m, 90 m, and 115 m. Hard floaties work well on the soft muddy bottom. Carp are the main target. Barbel and bass are also present. Kurper can feed on worm baits. Papgooi is the standard method here. The dam sits close to OR Tambo International Airport, so planes pass overhead during a session.
Blaauwpan sits in Bonaero Park on Mirabel Road near Kempton Park. A security gate controls entry at the end of a gravel access road off Mirabel. The lake is fenced with palisades. Grass banks ring most of the water. A dirt track runs along the shore for cars and bakkies. The park gets busy on weekends and later in the week. This is a day venue on public municipal water. There is no campsite or lodge on the city-run side. Fishing is free for day visitors. A separate private house venue sits on part of the shoreline. That venue is not part of this listing.
