Chelmsford Dam Nature Reserve sits on Ntshingwayo Dam about 26 km from Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife runs the reserve. You fish the open dam bank, camp on the shoreline, or stay in a self-catering chalet.
The fishing
Ntshingwayo Dam is the main water body. It is also known as Chelmsford Dam on the Ngagane River. Carp, barbel, bass, kurper, and yellowfish are common catches. Papgooi works well for carp and barbel. You can fish from the open bank or from a boat. Power boats need a valid skipper licence. Life jackets are required on the water. All boats must be registered with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Confirm the fishing rules with the venue.

Staying at Chelmsford Dam Nature Reserve
The reserve is about 23 km from Newcastle off the N11 toward Ladysmith. Ntshingwayo Dam is the third largest dam in KwaZulu-Natal. Grassland around the dam holds springbok, blesbok, red hartebeest, wildebeest, and zebra. Bird life is rich on the dam and grasslands. Sandford campsite has 24 sites along the dam. Most sites have power. Leokop campsite also has braai stands and shared ablutions with hot water. A four-bed self-catering chalet sits on the water. A shop sells bait, wood, and basic groceries. Day visitors can use playgrounds and boat ramps. Gate times are 06:00 to 19:00. Summer gate hours may run longer on some dates. Confirm gate times with the venue before you travel. No pets are allowed. Medical services and shops are in Newcastle about 26 km away. Prices and rules: - Conservation entry: about R60 per adult and R30 per child - Stay: R660 per night minimum charge for 2 people - Extra adult: R330 per night - Child age 3 to 12: R165 per night - Wild Card members may pay different conservation fees - Boat and other reserve fees: confirm the price with the venue before you book.
