Free State, Ventersburg, Allemanskraal Dam
Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve is the oldest provincial reserve in the Free State. It wraps Allemanskraal Dam near Ventersburg. Camp, fish carp and yellowfish, and watch game on the veld.
Allemanskraal Dam holds carp, barbel, yellowfish, and mudfish. The Sand River feeds the dam and splits the reserve into north and south sections. Bank anglers and boat anglers both use the water. Papgooi is common from the shore. Fishing permits are available at reception. Confirm angling rules and boat permits with the venue before you visit.
The reserve covers about 12 000 hectares around Allemanskraal Dam. Turn off the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg and drive about 10 km to the gate. The northern section has hills, kloofs, and sweet thorn veld. The southern section has open grassland with springbok, blesbok, and black wildebeest. Giraffe, white rhino, buffalo, and other game occur in the reserve. Ten waterfront holiday homes and ten self-catering chalets sleep five or six guests. Group quarters and single quarters suit school groups and conferences. A swimming pool, tennis court, conference hall, and lecture hall are on site. A bush camp with ablutions sleeps up to 16. No shop is on site. Bring your own food and braai wood. Gate hours are 07:00 to 18:30. The office is open 07:30 to 16:00. Day visitors and overnight guests are welcome. Kids are welcome.
