Northern Cape, Warrenton, Vaalharts Weir
Vaalharts Weir is a public storage weir on the Vaal River east of Warrenton. Anglers picnic and fish the calm basin for carp and barbel along the open banks.
The weir pool holds carp and barbel in still Vaal River water. Bank anglers use papgooi rigs with dough baits and red floats. The upstream river also has reed islands and slower channels. Confirm access points, permits, and catch rules with the water authority before you visit.
Vaalharts Storage Weir was built in 1938 on the Vaal River about 13 km upstream of Warrenton. It diverts water into the Vaalharts irrigation scheme, one of the largest in South Africa. The concrete barrage creates a broad, mirror-calm pool popular for picnics, braais, and bank fishing. This is public dam water, not a private resort. Day visitors fish from open banks and picnic spots near the weir. Small boats and canoes use the calm water in places. There is no formal resort or campsite on the wall itself. Fishing permits and picnic access fees are not published for casual anglers. Confirm the price and rules with the water authority before you visit. Last updated at: 19 September 2026.
