KwaZulu-Natal, Paulpietersburg, Bivane Dam
Bivane Dam sits in northern KwaZulu-Natal on the R69 between Vryheid and Pongola. The clear water draws bass anglers, while carp, kurper, yellowfish and barbel also show up. Self-catering chalets, bush camps and upgraded campsites line the shore.
Bass fishing is the main draw here, and most anglers work from a boat. The dam has plenty of underwater structure and clear water, so a quiet approach helps. Carp, kurper, yellowfish and barbel are also present. Annual bass competitions run on the dam. Day access works through a season ticket. Confirm the rules and ticket options with the venue before you visit.
Bivane Dam is run by the Impala Water Users Association. The reserve is malaria free, with no hippos or crocodiles in the dam. That makes it a practical family stop in northern KZN. You can book campsites with their own braai, electricity and water, bush camps near the dam or river, self-catering chalets in 2, 5 and 6 sleeper sizes, or the newer gastehuis. Communal ablutions, a washing machine and a tumble dryer are on site. A tuck shop and card facilities cover extras. Day visits use a season ticket rather than a single day fee. Individual packages start at about R1000 for 6 visits, R1200 for 8 visits, or R1500 for 12 visits. Accommodation rates are not listed publicly. Confirm stay prices and season ticket rules with the venue before you book. Last updated at: 24 August 2026.
