North West, Bloemhof, Bloemhof Dam
Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve sits 4 km east of Bloemhof on the R34 in North West. Fish the dam and the Vaal below the wall, camp at the angling area, or stay in a chalet.
The dam holds carp, barbel, bass, kurper, mudfish and yellowfish. You can fish from the open bank or from a boat. Papgooi works well for carp and barbel. Release yellowfish if you catch them. Angling is also allowed on the Vaal River below the dam wall. Confirm the fishing rules with the venue.
The reserve is a 12 000 ha North West Parks conservancy on the north shore of Bloemhof Dam. It is 4 km east of Bloemhof on the R34 towards Hoopstad. Plains game includes springbok, black wildebeest, eland and gemsbok. Camp next to the water at the angling area. Ablutions have toilets, showers and hot water. Self-catering chalets, sleeping halls, a log cabin and a hunting camp are also on the reserve. Chalets sit about 1.5 km from the dam. Units have linen. Bring your own towels. The log cabin needs your own cutlery and crockery. There is no TV, air conditioner or microwave in the units. A boat launch is on site. Children are welcome.
